Google-Ing
Efficiency- accomplishment of or ability to accomplish a job with a minimum expenditure of time and effort: The assembly line increased industry’s efficiency.
Last week we learned how to maximize efficiency by properly searching on Google. Time is the one thing that we can’t get back, so we have to use it wisely. That is why we learned the most effective, time saving ways to search on the internet and to get the results that we need. In addition to learned how to be more efficient with searches, we learned about all the cool gadgets that Google has to offer that we didn’t know about. For example the calculator in the search field, and the I’m Feeling Lucky search tab. Like with anything else in life, you should do things the best you can, and that’s what we learned with Goolgle-ing. The Ism tells it best, Every Second Counts.
Detroit Welcomes New Hotel Rooms
I recently read an article that
Detroit is expected have 1,800 new hotel rooms in the very near future, and 1,200 of them are going to be in casinos. The topic of conversation is whether are there going to be people to fill these rooms, and if so is it a good thing for the city? Is this new addition to the city going to attract people to come downtown more and increase the economy? Only time will tell. Personally I think it might not be the best thing for this city right now. It is good for the city in regards to creating new jobs and starting to move in the right direction; I’m just a little reluctant to believe that it’s going to be crowded and occupied over 75% at any given weekend.
I sincerely hope that I am completely wrong and that this development of new hotel rooms will be the first big step towards reviving
Detroit. The last thing that I would want to see is people from all over the State going to the Casinos on Fridays, cashing there whole paycheck on gambling, and then sleeping there because of the convenience now.
Marketing Gurus
One of the first topics that we discussed/learned about in Bizdom was about Leverage. It was actually the topic of conversation on our first day of class with Dan Gilbert. I got the true meaning of Leverage and how to use it when our two guest speakers from Rock Financial came in to speak to our class. David Hall and Luigi talked to us about product branding and marketing our future companies. David Hall is incredible at using leverage with what he does to receive services at a much better rate. For example with all of the Radio spots and TV ads; they all started from one station that David had a connection with. He got one of the employees a mortgage and they gave him a cheap spot on the radio.
The most important concept that I learned from that day, was to use your resources that you have and try to get the most of out them. David and Luigi are Marketing gurus and had a lot of knowledge to share with our class. It is crucial to always look for the most effective way to Market your company, and what makes sense at the time. They gave great insight to us for when we start our companies, and I will definitely apply what I learned from them to my business.
Peter Holt- A true inspiration
It’s reassuring to know that an old alcoholic like myself can be a billionaire in this day and age (just kidding). The San Antonio Spurs owner is a true inspiration in many ways. First and foremost, what he did for the Spurs organization is incredible. Its goes to show you those 20 “Big Shot” millionaires are clueless about running a NBA franchise. He completely turned that organization around and brought a couple of NBA Championships to
San Antonio.
More admirable than his accolades in
San Antonio, is his strategy in picking his players. He doesn’t go down the traditional path and chooses the top draft pick out of College, or the most impressive dunker out of High School. He picks and chooses his players based upon personal merit, how active they are in the community, education, and a list of criteria that goes on and on. He avoids troublesome players and has a list of stand up guys that you wouldn’t be ashamed to bring home to Mommy for Thanksgiving dinner. Much respect Peter Holt…much respect.
SCORE
We had the chance to meet an experienced entrepreneur by the name of Mel Ettenson last week in Business Wisdom. Mel works for a non-profit organization called SCORE which is sponsored by the SBA (Small Business Administration). Mel has quiet the tract record in that he has owned roughly 17 businesses in his days, and he is still active in the community.
Mel gave me a lot of insight as to what it takes to be an entrepreneur, and he went over the fundamentals, which we seem to forget sometimes. Mel has an old school mentality, which the majority of us lack these days. I am a firm believer that the fundamentals of running a business have been thrown away by today’s Business Owners. People are too focused on technology, and all sorts of other things that they forgot the core of there business and why there are there. Mel reminded me a lot of my Grandfather, and it was a pleasure to hear him speak
RSS Feeds
Last week in class we had the luxury to learn about RSS feeds. In layman’s terms in stands for Really Simple Syndication. I am the type of person that constantly wants to updated with news in the world, and updates about what’s going on. That’s why learning/using RSS feeds now makes it much more convenient for me to receive my news.
Some people want updates on Sports, and others on World news, either way RSS feeds can cater to those needs. It is a much more efficient way to get your updates instead of continuously checking multiple sites.
Blogger
So, I am kind of new with this whole blog thing, so if any of you have pointers feel free to share your knowlege. I am happy to have met all of you and I look forward to growing with you over the next two years. We are all EXTREMELY lucky to be in this program and we should never take it for granted.
